by Robert Icke and Duncan Macmillan based on the 1949 novel Nineteen Eighty-Four by George Orwell.

1984

Inspired by this chilling play, I started by using platforms such as Pinterest to start looking into shape and form. Derelict buildings, with crumbling walls and broken windows, helping me to start building my dystopic setting. I knew I wanted to incorporate revolves in my design as I wanted to expand the settings in a dynamic way, I played about with circles of cardboard, experimenting with how they could perhaps overlap and revolve outwards, opening up the space. I also wanted the main setting to be based around the old brick-a-brac shop where Winston and Julia have there illegal meetings. I think it holds important symbolism of their rebellion, the love lost in this dystopic world and it is eventually their fatal flaw.
